Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is located on the top of a hill in the territories of Sha Tin. It is located a short distance from the tourist routes. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, which was started in the 1950s, is actually not just one temple but five temples, four pavilions, and one pagoda. There are more than 430 steps to walk. Along that long ascent are dozens of life-size gold-painted Buddha statues. Take your time and look closely at the statues as each statue is different.

When you climb up, keep your eyes open. The Shah Tin area and the surrounding mountains are famous as home to wild monkeys. If you are lucky they will sit on the road or suddenly appear and cross the road. Once you reach the top, you will have a peaceful atmosphere and some beautiful views of Shah Tin and the new Territories.

In addition to the main hall, there are more than 12,800 small gold Buddha statues (also known as the Ten Thousand Buddha Hall). Here you have the opportunity to climb the 9th floor of Pagoda (also known as the Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda) and see the beautiful scenery. If you have an HSBC 100 banknote printed during the period 1985-2002, you can see the picture behind the ten thousand Buddha Pagoda. There is a small terrace between the main hall and the pagoda, with 18 life-size paintings painted on it. These numbers represent the 18 most important students of the Buddha. Here you have the chance to see a white elephant from the blue lion belonging to Pu Xian (the lord of fire) and Wen Shu. In addition, there is an ancestral hall and four small temples.
